From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyle's kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”...more

It was a personal account of a real event. Where's the propaganda. If anything Chris spent more time criticizing the military brass than praising it - quite the opposite of propaganda.
I found no propaganda whatsoever in the book. I did find an honest insight into one person's perspective -- one that was often intriguiging, unexpected, and sometimes I even disagreed with his views. But it was his experiences with war. The book was really about the conflict between loyalties--his loyalty to his country and--perhaps more importantly--his loyalty to his 'brothers' in arms, and how that loyalty conflicted with his loyalty to his family, and the impact it had on his marriage.
Yes, he gives personal views -- he's pro-gun, anti-welfare, etc.. -- but while I'm not those things, I understand that I'm getting a look at who this man was, not a debate on those topics. He also talks about he could care less about Iraq or whoever he was killing. All he knew was that Congress sent a bunch of Americans into a war zone and bad guys were trying to kill his brothers and he was going to keep that from happening... and he LOVED it. He made no bones about that he loved killing 'bad guys.' I found the honesty both in his viewpoints and his criticisms of the military to be refreshing, and they made it seem real.
Forget about embedding reporters in platoons in conflict. This book gets you inside the head of a soldier while he's looking through the scope of his sniper rifle, as bullets are flying and buddies dying beside him. It's 100X better than watching news video from an embedded reporter.
If that kind of insight into a soldier's psyche doesn't interest you, then this book isn't for you. It's real, it's gritty and it's honest -- and for some people that will make it distasteful. (less)

I was all excited when I purchased this book, expecting a Carlos Hathcock type tale of derring-do. What a letdown - I was sick of Mr Kyle by page 5.
To begin with, I'm not sure who to credit for this bit of writing; I suspect that Kyle contributed little but the anecdotal accounts and his name to the effort, as two other names are listed with his on the cover. Interestingly, his wife is not given any co-author status although she provides significant input throughout the book.

I tried, I really tried but I just couldn't make it through this book. I wanted to like it because I'm ex military and I live in Texas but about half way through I put the book away for good. The writing was dull and choppy, the sentences short and non descriptive. It read as if it had been written by my nine year old son. I found the repeated referral to bar fights and the continuous boasting of kill numbers to be a complete turnoff. I had hoped for colorful narrative like that of Black Hawk Do...more

Excellent read, absolutely enlightening to how thoroughly enjoyable, not to mention competitive, war can be to those that are obviously hooked on the adrenaline rush. The author is such a man, and when promoted out into an office job, a planner, turns it down because what he wants to do is be right in the middle of the action with a gun and his mates and was willing to put up with all kinds of hardship and danger, not to mention turning down a pay rise in order to do so.

Oh my goodness. I really wanted to like this book. I tried hard to like this book, even if it started out with Chris describing Iraqi women and children as 'evil savages' who he enjoyed killing. His only regret was that he did not get a chance to kill more of them. I respect the sacrifices that the members of our military have made over the course of our relatively short history, and the trials that they face when they return back home. So, even if I was disgusted with the first few pages, I rea...more

I'm hesitant to write a review of this book. I'm not a military reader, nor do I usually delve into autobiographies. But, I saw Kyle on a tv interview, and liked how he appeared there. I have come away from the book with a better understanding of what the guys on the ground experienced vs. what the news media has shown us here at home. A long time ago when I was studying political science, I studied a mission that failed back in the '70's. I read first hand accounts from the military commander i...more

This book was, without a doubt, one of the worst pieces of literature I have ever wasted my time with.
I was recommended this book by a colleague; and I wish I had the hours back that it took to read.
The author comes across as an unsympathetic, often racist, gun-ho 'shoot first, think later'-type - some of the best quotes:
* 'I don't shoot people with Korans - I'd like to, but I don't'
* 'At times, [killing] was a game'

This is a book written by a Navy SEAL Sniper, not a professional author. Yes, he did get some help, but it's ultimately his tale. Could it have been written better? I don't know, maybe, but I think it would have made the book feel more like a 'story', and less like an account of his experiences. Personally, I loved this book. There is no sugar coating, no PC koombyah. This is an account of war, and it seems pretty realistic and gritty. I don't feel like the author was grandstanding or bragging,...more

Clint Eastwood certainly presents the case very efficiently: if only we could kill all the people who hate America, the world would be a better place. Though at times I did suspect him of reductio ad absurdum.

To start with this book is poorly written which makes it a pain to read, but the real point taken from this book is just how clueless the author can be.

This is without doubt an interesting and I believe a valuable book. I note several reviewers which note that the book isn't well written. This is somewhat true in that the writer makes use often of short declarative sentences. There are no literary flourishes no genteel turns of phrase. On the other hand the writing style is direct, clear and (again) interesting. The book is often much like reading a letter from a friend.

On one hand, this book was an interesting look into the day-to-day life of a soldier. Mr. Kyle seems to have no qualms admitting to the less glamorous sides of war, including the bureaucracy surrounding everything a soldier does. This book showcases a pathological lack of introspection on behalf of its author. It takes a complex world at a chaotic time and reduces it to black and white so that he doesn't have to feel remorse or contemplate the root causes of violence and how it might have been avoided in the first place. I respect Chris Kyle's service and hoped to find a thoughtful reflection on his experience in Iraq but this cowboy turned Navy Seal's lack of self-reflection was really hard to read.
This book made me sad - both for the Americans who were killed or maimed, and for the people who are killed and maimed by the Americans.

Why take a great book then mess around with the truth of it had Chris kyle still been around I think the movie would of been totally different. Plot overview[edit]
American Sniper tells the story of Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL who completed four tours in Iraq from 1999–2009. The book describes Kyle's upbringing in Odessa, Texas, Navy SEAL training, and combat experiences in Iraq.[5][6]
Kyle describes his role in the battle for control of Ramadi, events that led to Iraqi insurgents' nicknaming Kyle the 'Devil of Ramadi' and placing a bounty on his head.[7][8]

Kyle writes that after his first confirmed kill, 'the others come easy. I don't have to psych myself up, or do something special mentally—I look through the scope, get my target in the cross hairs, and kill my enemy, before he kills one of my people.'[9]

Reaction[edit]
Post-publication retraction[edit]
In July 2014, the sub-chapter 'Punching Out Scruff Face' was removed from later editions of the book, after a three-week trial in U.S. Federal Court wherein the jury found that the author, Chris Kyle, had unjustly enriched himself by defaming plaintiff Jesse Ventura. In the book, Kyle described blackening the eye of 'Scruff Face', whom he later identified in media interviews as Jesse Ventura.[10] The jury awarded Ventura $500,000 for defamation and $1,345,477.25 for unjust enrichment.[11][12] In December 2014, attorneys for Ventura filed a separate lawsuit against HarperCollins, the parent company of the publisher, for failing to check the accuracy of the story it used in publicity. The suit alleges that the false account used in publicity had 'increased sales' and generated 'millions of dollars for HarperCollins.'[13] On June 13, 2016, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit vacated the verdict on the defamation count, remanding the case for a new trial on that count, and reversed the unjust enrichment verdict outright.[14]
Charity donation claims[edit]
Some sources claimed Kyle's family had said all his book proceeds were donated to veterans' charities. Salon and National Review disputed the donation amount, asserting that around 2 percent ($52,000) went to the charities, while Kyle's family received $3 million.[15][16]
Military record claims[edit]
In May 2016, The Intercept claimed that Kyle's autobiography 'embellished' his military record, and that he had been warned by Navy officials about the inaccuracies before publication.[17][18][19][20] Others, including co-author Scott McEwen, disputed this.[21] On May 28, The Hollywood Reporter did an analysis, concluding that the newly released internal Navy documents were inconclusive — that the document that typically is the definitive record of military service matched Kyle's claims and that the Navy had not yet publicly stated this document or the facts within it were incorrect. Kyle's DD Form 214 listed a total of two Silver Stars and six Bronze stars, more than he claimed in his book.[22]On July 8, 2016, the U.S. Navy corrected Kyle's DD-214 regarding some decorations listed on his original discharge document.[23] The Navy revised it to one Silver Star and four Bronze Stars with valor.[23] The Navy said 'Kyle would have played no role in the production of his personnel files other than signing the DD-214 upon his discharge' and '[a]fter thoroughly reviewing all available records, the Navy determined an error was made' and 'issued a corrected copy of the DD-214, which accurately reflects Kyle's years of honorable and extraordinary service.'[23]
Film adaptation[edit]
Clint Eastwood's film American Sniper (2014) is based on Kyle's autobiography. It had its world première on November 11, 2014, at the American Film Institute Festival, followed by a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 25, 2014. It received a wide release January 16, 2015.[24][25][26] Kyle is portrayed by Bradley Cooper, and his wife Taya Kyle is portrayed by Sienna Miller.[27] For his portrayal of Kyle, Cooper received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and the film was nominated in five other categories, including Best Picture.[28] The film won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing.[29]
